CVE-2026-120459
python-jose through 3.5.0 Authentication Bypass via Empty HMAC Key
Description

python-jose through 3.5.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge JWTs because HMACKey and CryptographyHMACKey accept zero-length HMAC secrets. When an application's HS256/HS384/HS512 verification key resolves to empty, such as an oct JWK with empty k, attackers can forge tokens with arbitrary claims that jwt.decode accepts.

CVSS Scores
The Common Vulnerability Scoring System is a standardized framework for assessing the severity of vulnerabilities in software and systems. We collect and displays CVSS scores from various sources for each CVE.
Score Version Severity Vector Exploitability Score Impact Score Source
CVSS 3.1 HIGH 83251b91-4cc7-4094-a5c7-464a1b83ea10
CVSS 3.1 HIGH [email protected]
CVSS 4.0 CRITICAL 83251b91-4cc7-4094-a5c7-464a1b83ea10
CVSS 4.0 CRITICAL [email protected]
Solution
Update python-jose to a version that mitigates the JWT authentication bypass vulnerability.
  • Update python-jose to version 3.5.1 or later.
  • Ensure HMAC keys are not empty during verification.
  • Validate JWT claims rigorously after decoding.
