CVE-2026-121553
Cotonti through 1.0.0 Predictable Validation Tokens via md5(microtime())
Description

Cotonti through 1.0.0 generates registration and email-change validation tokens with md5(microtime()), allowing attackers to bypass email-ownership verification by predicting tokens. Attackers can derive the generation time from the HTTP Date header and compute candidate tokens offline. They then submit these tokens to the users.register.php validate handler to activate accounts or confirm email addresses they do not control.

Solution
Replace weak MD5 token generation with a strong, unpredictable method.
  • Use a cryptographically secure random number generator.
  • Increase token length and complexity.
  • Implement token expiration and retry limits.
  • Consider using HMAC or signed tokens.
CWE - Common Weakness Enumeration

While CVE identifies specific instances of vulnerabilities, CWE categorizes the common flaws or weaknesses that can lead to vulnerabilities. CVE-2026-121553 is associated with the following CWEs:

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC) stores attack patterns, which are descriptions of the common attributes and approaches employed by adversaries to exploit the CVE-2026-121553 weaknesses.
