CVE-2026-123203
NEURON through 9.0.2 Stack-based Buffer Overflow via CoreNEURON dataset tokens
Description

NEURON (CoreNEURON) through 9.0.2 contains a stack buffer overflow vulnerability that allows attackers to corrupt stack memory by supplying over-long tokens in a crafted model dataset. Attackers can place oversized version or mechanism-name tokens in bbcore_mech.dat, globals.dat, or files.dat loaded by nrniv-core to crash the process.

Solution
Update CoreNEURON to patch a stack buffer overflow vulnerability allowing memory corruption via crafted model datasets.
  • Update CoreNEURON to a version later than 9.0.2.
  • Avoid loading crafted model datasets.
  • Validate token lengths in model datasets.
CWE - Common Weakness Enumeration

While CVE identifies specific instances of vulnerabilities, CWE categorizes the common flaws or weaknesses that can lead to vulnerabilities. CVE-2026-123203 is associated with the following CWEs:
