CVE-2026-73860
CRIU: Parasite hijack triggered by snapshot of malicious software
Description

CRIU is a checkpoint and restore tool for Linux. Prior to 4.2.1, CRIU injects a syscall;int3 sequence at the start of the first executable virtual memory area and resumes the target process to execute parasite code. Malicious code in the target process can keep an rseq critical section armed over that injection point so the kernel's restartable-sequence abort redirects execution to an attacker-controlled callback when CRIU resumes the process. In container snapshot environments, the hijacked parasite runs with seccomp disabled and a relaxed AppArmor profile and supplies trusted data to the privileged CRIU process, which can enable higher-privilege code execution. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.1.

Solution
Update CRIU to version 4.2.1 or later to fix the syscall injection vulnerability.
  • Update CRIU to version 4.2.1 or later.
  • Ensure container environments use patched CRIU.
  • Review security profiles for CRIU processes.
CWE - Common Weakness Enumeration

While CVE identifies specific instances of vulnerabilities, CWE categorizes the common flaws or weaknesses that can lead to vulnerabilities. CVE-2026-73860 is associated with the following CWEs:

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC) stores attack patterns, which are descriptions of the common attributes and approaches employed by adversaries to exploit the CVE-2026-73860 weaknesses.

We scan GitHub repositories to detect new proof-of-concept exploits. Following list is a collection of public exploits and proof-of-concepts, which have been published on GitHub (sorted by the most recently updated).

Results are limited to the first 15 repositories due to potential performance issues.
